Xbox Problem

My xbox is making some strange sounds... It turns on and everything but either the hardrive or the fan is somewhat busted. when I turn the fan speed override on to 100% it sounds like it is really struggling so that may be it. Would it be best if I opened the xbox and checked around to find the problem?

I can't recommend at first that you "poke around," I'd call Microsoft first if you can learn the true problem.
But then, after speaking to one of their support people and that they have no idea what they're talking about, you may learn that they no longer provide support for Xboxs. Anyway, I think that that is what'll happen.
Then you could open it up, just try not to move anything or... you know... "disrupt" anything.

As soon as you say its modded they will hang up. But I would guess that dust build up or a wire is in the fan. Opening it up wouldent be a bad idea.

Why would you even say that it's modded?
I'd just say that it's a normal xbox.

They wouldn't even waist their time fixing it anyway.
Opening it yourself is probably the
only option you have. Just hope it
is the fan and not the HDD.

There is 6 allen screws on the botton, 4 under the feet, and one under each sticker. You could probaly find a better tut at xbox-scene.com

i would say DONT open it ,yet,
i would try cleaning out the fan(with one of those dust remover cans)
becasue most xboxs will no longer work after being opened!
unless you make sure nothing is moved when being opened, but still.
its not a great idea to open it, unless all others have Failed.

I've never had any problems with opening mine; Just don't touch anything. And If you have to touch something (chips especially) use gloves (silicons) or at least wash the grease off your hands. Also the canister thing won't do much except spread the dust around :\
Don't work on carpet because of electrostatic buildup. Maybe get one of those wristbands for getting rid of electrostatic.

Most xbox do work after they're opened, unless somebody messes stuff up, which if you're not good at putting stuff back where it's supposed to be could happen. If you know what you're doing I would open it up, take out the hard drive and dvd player by unplugging them and removing the screws necessary to get it out, then blow some compressed air into it to get the dust out(hold your xbox up to the air instead of pointing the can down at it, because it freezes it if you point it down, probably won't kill it but I'm sure it's not good). Make sure you blow from the inside of the xbox through the fan to the outside to clear that out and just check your fan to make sure nothing else is messing it up. Put your box back together after that and hopefully you didn't mess it up.
This is a great site for xbox repairing tutorials

It may just be a cable or somethhing touching the fan when its spinning, anyway open it, there are tutorials everywhere about this, and it's really easy to open, if you can't see anything touching the fan the better thing to do is to change it, unless you have an xbox 1.1 which has a fan on the cpu... you'll have to check both then.

Wow thanks for all the help guys

the screws on my xbox don't match an allen wrench sadly \=
I'm not sure what type they are, but I believe that it is the disc drive now. It works alright but things tend to freeze up randomly and start going again and it makes funny sounds... If I can find the right thing to use I'll try opening it up
