Xbox 360 HDD in Xbox Slim

Okay well I figured I should do a bit of research before dishing out like $100 for a freaking 250GB hard drive. So I figured "What does an old 360 HDD have that the slim one doesn't..." And well I searched some videos and as far as I can see, the only difference is that the hard drive is in an external casing, and has a converter from standard SATA with power to XSATA... well I might be wrong about this but here it goes:
Could I take apart an old 360 HDD, and put that into my slim and have it work the same? Because I would rather buy a 20 GB drive for cheap and just use that to play firefight and Xbox LIVE cooperative campaign.
