I wouldn't say High School is "pointless" or a "waist of time". I think I better description is "boring and counterproductive".

Counterproductive because one of the main thing students learn is to detest learning. True knowledge and learning comes by will, not by force.

Grim, just remember that you're not the only one who has had to put up with boring school being thrust upon you. You clearly can't spell that well(ridiculous, among other things you spell wrong occasionally), so your English needs some work. I know spelling is a small part of being smart, but try to get people to buy your business's stuff when there's spelling errors in the description and in your programs... It's pretty damn hard to be successful without high school.

BTW grim, if I graduate the top 20% from my class I will get into mercer county community collage for free, and there's a good chance that I would get to transfer to another collage for free. Now collage isn't for everyone but if you don't want to work as soon as you get out of highschool and get a degree it's a good way to go.
Post a vid of you getting 100% on a song on expert with presicion mode and hyper-speed lvl 5 cheats activated and holding the guitar with ur pinky.

BTW, grim, a little late for this, but i do agree with you, school is a waste of time and its pointless, we can make constructive things without the fucking school stealin ur fucking spare time and fucking leavin you fucking homework, i dont fucking know why the school was ever created....

That and this was my geeky rants for today, now i'll go and do something constructive.

Thanks for the feed back. I don't plan to goto collage, thats why I'm tying to set time aside to work on some things now. Halo is a big part of my life now, and now that I have the knowledge to do things, I want to get it out into the community. The thing that pissed me off is that, there are parents who wish their kids could so stuff like this. My dad just wishes I could spend my entire life in school.

OK my car starts making a weird sound, I lift up the hood and find a shirt stuck around the engine, I take it out and start the car back up and the noise is still there. I then check the transmission fluid and oil and I find that their both a little low, so I add some oil and trans fluid. SOUND IS STILL THERE WHEN I'M MOVING. I notice that the steering wheel vibrates slightly when I hear the sound so I check the power steering, empty, not a drop in it. So I call my grandfather and we put more power steering fluid in. I drive around the block and the sound seems to be gone but when I pull up next to the curb, the sound is back and there is a trail of the power steering fluid on the road. Now I have get that fixed

And to grim: my mom gave up on helping me in school.

I felt the same way you did about school, but it's necessary. Your dad just wants you to be well educated. I know you feel like it's going to be forever that you're in school, but hypothetically if you were to go to school until you were 30, assuming you only live until you are 80(that's probably very conservative with advances in medicine), that's only 3/8 of your life. It is a good idea to learn on your own and what not with how you are working with halo. It is more like what you do in college, which by the way you can most likely go to. You should apply for the FAFSA and see what kind of financial aid you are able to get. Assess where you can go from there, and if all you can afford is community college or technical school, work on your basic core credits required for all degrees, so that you can transfer your credits to a larger college and finish your degree there. I know you're pissed at your education, but you really have a skewed view right now, at least that's how it seems.

Heh. That's not what I'm talking about, but she swims. She has like thirty trophies for first place on pretty much everything. I call her Michelle Phelps. But apparently her form is pretty poor ...

But what I meant from my statement was her friends. Their IQs drop daily.

Not necessarily. You could choose to make what you learn in school helpful or a disadvantage. It all depends on your attitude toward school and how well you do.

You could take what you learned and put it toward something like a goal you are trying to achieve. However, you can take that useful piece of information and waste it. You describe it as being "boring and counterproductive." That is how you think of it or use it. Well you could change it to "useful and handy."

I Know that this is a rant thread so here is my rant:
Everyone looks at something from its downside first. They don't take the time to respect or possibly use something that may seem like hell, but really be worth it in the long run.

Thanks and goodbye.

Some stuff in school is useful like learning grammer but maths learning algebra finding the value of x and other stuff like finding the radius of a circle seems pointless to me and I will most likely not a have that you will use that in.

Also I'm absolutely hating art at school we have set stuff we have to learn shouldn't art be about drawing what you want I mean your can't fail a class in art for not being able to draw a certain type of thing and the school is too cheap to get photoshop and we aren't allowed to install any new program's so I can't use GIMP even though they have brand new Mac's.

Grrr... my rant is that pretty much and I can't get Halo Wars till Saturday :(

It's been known to happen...

My Opinion:

High school is rather... unnecessary. It, at most, teaches you the hectic schedule and the importance of deadlines that you will face in the near future. Almost a preliminary course in the corporate world. Otherwise, I find that the education system is incredibly flawed. Look, senior year, I don't want to learn how to write like Shakespeare. I want to learn how circuits work. I want to learn how to create an MMORPG. I want to learn things that will assist in my future, not take part in courses that only contribute to stress.
School is great. It's great social interaction, and it can teach you a lot about who you are. But when the courses get way too into specifics, when, by school curriculum, you have to start taking advanced courses that you will never use again, that's when school loses its value.
It's all about, or it should be, what you want to take. School doesn't allow that. It's dumb, and the system is flawed. Instead, I have to learn about how Woodrow Wilson passed the Federal Reserve Act. Which was not a bad Act to have passed. But what I'm saying is... when my grade is affected because they asked what the act was on a test, that's useless to me. I can guarantee you all, 90%, that I will never hear mention of that particular Act, a week from now, onwards for the rest of my life. That's when I get frustrated.

IMO, high school teaches you to live off of coffee, get use to getting up around 5-6AM every day, and getting use to wanting to kill a different person every day to make you feel better. A lot of successful people dropped out or didn't care about high school. But really high school curiculums are epic fail. They should offer coarses that will actually prepare you for the real world.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... =education
Small portion of a book by Adam Smith.
The statements in that small portion of text is incredibly accurate, especially considering it was published in the late 1700's.

A Colorado school district removed the grade system altogether.Basically not bumping up the students until they show they've mastered the subjects.

Many school districts around the US are trying reform their system to increase test scores but they constantly overlook the real fucking issues to the drop in test scores.

Reasons:
  • 1) "School is boring."
Many people will just see this as a immature rant by students and plainly ignore the statement when it is in fact a leading cause of bad test scores.
How does anyone expect a person to excel on anything they are strongly unwilling to do the task? Now you could make the courses more fun but school boards will put that through when hell freezes over.
Another solution is to have enjoyable supplemental classes, a.k.a., elective classes.

Elective classes are normally chosen by will as something a student wants to do. "OMG, I can has fun in high schoolz?"
Sadly however, elective classes are always on the chopping block when saving money becomes more important than the students.

Here's a little quiz for those who have been in high school/junior high or are still in it:
-> How many elective classes did your school have during your first year of High School/Junior High and what were they?
-> How many elective classes does your school have now or the last time you attended and which ones were cut?

My answers:
During my first year there 8 elective classes at my High School. Which are Ceramics, Metal Shop, Wood Shop, Air Force ROTC, ROP Auto, Arts, Theater(can't remember the actual name) and Music.

As of my Graduation Metal Shop and Wood Shop were cut, ROP Auto cannot be cut because it is an ROP program and not controlled by the school district and also only available to Juniors and Seniors. My school used to have a computer programming course but that was cut long before I showed up. ROTC had over 200 cadets in my first year, they are now down to less than 70. And because of that their funding is cut. Some of their money came in from a snack store but the Principal shut it down. They are now on the chopping block right beside Ceramics and Art.

So much for the fun of school. (>_>)
  • 2) "Forced Education."
Like I said in a post above, true education comes by will, not by force. If you truly want to learn something, you will seek the knowledge by your own free will.
How often has something come to mind and you hop on the computer to learn about it?

Like in that excerpt from Adam Smith, people whom are forced to do something is far less likely to return to doing once they are done with it.

He's another question for you students:
-> What is/was the reason you attended High School?
  • A: You attended to obtain your education.
  • B: You attended to obtain your diploma so that you can attended a College of your choice.
  • C: You attended because you were forced to do so by law and/or by family.
If you were to confront any HighSchool student today with this question, I guarantee at least 95% will answer C. Some will answer B and C.
Even the smartest of students will not answer A because at that point they have already realized that High School has little more to offer than that slip proving you survived it.

Pretty much everyone on this board will say C, and a fewer less would say B and C.
  • 3) "Circadian Rhythm."
People in their teens have a Circadian Rhythm by far different than that of an adult.
Adolescents have a "Late-to-bed, Late-to-Rise" sleep cycle.[1] There have been many studies on school affects on a teenagers sleep habbits.[2]

Most schools (in the US) start at around 7:30am forcing students to wake at 5:00am to 6:00am in order to get ready for school. Most students will end up sleeping in class and cannot do anything about it.
This very early start makes it physically impossible for many students to perform in the first couple class periods.

I have personally had times where I sleep-walked to school. I cross the street near my house, my eye's still droopy, then suddenly I'm at the traffic light near my school and don't remember walking there.

There are still more but those are among the main issues. None of which have been adequately addressed.

All of that is so true :|

To the 1st part:
When my mom went to highschool they had an automotive shop, metal and wood shop. My first year there they had gotten rid of the automotive part and replaced it with tech lab 1 and 2, which were good classes but there was less hands on projects, and they had the metal and wood shops. The next year the metal shop teacher retired and the metal shop was completely disassembled, nothing but the bare frame of the room was left. Now the wood shop would have been taken away but someone took the job and made the class more exciting. He saw a collage that had cardboard boat races and thankfully the school approved it.

To the 2nd part:
Everything that I know about computers was not learned in school, well, maybe the first time I pushed the power button.. nope, learned that at home. I also learned most of my electrical skills from my grandfather.

To the 3rd part:
I cannot sleep at night for more then 2 hours strait if I'm in bed before 3AM, I always wake up at least 2 times during the night and when I'm finally ready to fully sleep I see the sun rising and hear my moms radio. I tend to finally be fully awake from 3pm to 7pm. The only way I can sleep through the night without waking up is by draining my body to the point to where I can't move, but even that doesn't work half of the time.
